An exerpt from Anais Nin's 1943 diary is the highlight of Volume 4. In it, she describes her fascination with the Haitian community in New York and her love affair with a young architect who would later become an icon of Haiti when he sculpted the "Free Slave," which stood before the palace in Port-au-Prince. Studies of Henry Miller, Nin's writing, and a memoir by Anton Chekhov's sister, Maria, are included.
